Chicago Archdiocesan Requirements

The Archdiocese of Chicago requires all volunteers and employees who work with children to complete the following:

1. Online Criminal Background Check

2. VIRTUS/Protecting God's Children training session (a VIRTUS Certificate is kept in the employee/volunteer personnel file)

3. CANTS from (Dept. of Children and Family Services: Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System form). The form is returned to the director of the group with which you are working, who then sends the original to Springfield. A copy is kept in the personnel file.

4. Code of Conduct Acknowledgment Form. A signed copy is kept in the personnel file.

The following is a tool to assist you in navigating the online system.
Instructions for completing the online Criminal Background Check
  • Log on to; scroll down to where you will see "Protecting Children" on the left-hand side and click on it
  • Click on Background Screening
  • Click on If you do not have a user ID and password
  • Click on Open the Site Search
  • Type in "Xavier" and click Search
  • Select St. Francis Xavier 9th for all PREP or parish volunteers
  • Select St. Francis Xavier--Linden for school volunteers
  • Type in the word "protection" for the Access Code
  • Select Volunteer
  • Fill out the rest of the form according to the instructions at the bottom of the web page
  • After you have completed the form, click on Submit Registration. You will then be prompted to input your user ID and password. This will take you to the Application Overview page. (Your date of birth is required at registration for the purpose of preventing duplicate applications in the system. For your security, this information is locked after your completion of the background check application form and is not made available to the user or organization.)
  • Make sure you complete all sections and when finished, click on Submit Application.
  • When the screen says "Your application has been successfully submitted," you are finished. Please print out a copy to hand in to the staff director. You should also keep a copy for your records.
VIRTUS/Protecting God's Children training session
To register for a VIRTUS training session:
  • Go to
  • Click on Registration, and then Begin the registration process
  • Select the Chicago, IL Archdiocese
  • Create your own user ID and password
  • Fill in all fields marked with an asterisk (*). 
  • To see upcoming training sessions, click on View a list of sessions and select the Chicago, IL Archdiocese. Training sessions are three hours long. 
To download or view a copy of the form, go to Click on "Protecting Children" on the left side of the page and scroll down to CANTS form. The form is returned to your staff director, who sends the original to Springfield. A copy is kept in the personnel/volunteer file. 

Code of Conduct Acknowledgment Form
To download or view a copy of the form, go to Click on "Protecting Children" on the left side of the page and scroll down to Code of Conduct form. At the end of the Code, select the page for volunteers. After you have signed it, return it to your staff director. A copy is kept in the volunteer file.

Ongoing Education

"Protecting God's Children"
All catechists are asked to engage in the ongoing education component of the "VIRTUS" program. This entails taking time to read short, informative articles that can be accessed online.

All catechists are required to be certified or working toward catechist certification. In-service opportunities will be provided on the parish, local, and archdiocesan levels. Flyers and information about upcoming workshops will be posted on the web page. 

All costs for workshops will be covered by the parish.
