What do SFX volunteers do for St. Thomas School?

Many of our parishioners spend a portion of their week helping to tutor students at St. Thomas of Canterbury School. However, more tutors are needed to assist with this very worthwhile program.

A great many students at St. Thomas are children of immigrant families or first generation citizens, and they often don't speak English at home. As a result, these very bright students need extra assistance in strengthening their English speaking and writing skills. This type of preparation can be accomplished very effectively by tutors. In addition, there are students at all grade levels who need tutoring in math.

Those who tutor at St. Thomas say that it is the most rewarding and interesting charitable work they do. To work with these eager students and watch them succeed is possibly the most fulfilling work there is. And tutoring the students at St. Thomas will help them go on to some of the best Catholic high schools.

So give us a hand! No teaching experience is needed, and times are flexible. If you have two or more hours a week to give to this deserving school community, you are welcome to volunteer. You can set your own schedule from Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 2:30 PM. The school is located at 5525 N. Magnolia in Chicago. If you wish to participate, please call Ms. Christine Boyd, the principal of St. Thomas, at (773) 271-8655. If you need more information, feel free to call our SFX St. Thomas liaison, Ray Gass, at (847) 251-7665.

We also provide the students at St. Thomas some much-needed supplies. The SFX Women's Club supports the St. Thomas school every year with their Supply the Supplies drive, which provides students with essential back-to-school items.  Contact the SFX Women's Club for more information.

Once a year, in addition to dedicating our time to tutoring students, we also take up a collection for the school. Click here, if you would like to make a donation for the benefit of St. Thomas of Canterbury school.
