Baptism

Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the church and to all the other sacraments. It is the first of the initiation sacraments, followed by Eucharist and Confirmation. Infant baptism is the custom of the Roman Catholic Church. However, whenever God gives the grace and the call, the church opens her arms to new members.

RCIA is the process that welcomes adults seeking baptism and membership in the Catholic Church.

St. Francis Xavier celebrates baptism for infants and children on Sunday afternoon by appointment. Please call Deacon Bob Kerls (847-251-1099) to schedule a baptism and register for the preparation session. Please allow ample time for the session to be held before the baptism.

One of the parish priests or deacons presides at the service. Godparents are chosen by the parents. Both godparents are to be Christian and one is to be a practicing, Confirmed Catholic. Parents are asked to attend a preparation session before the baptism of their child, and these sessions are held monthly on the second Wednesday of each month.
